Biography
Shagun Jhaver is an assistant professor at Rutgers University whose research focuses on content moderation, online governance, and the interaction between users and the algorithms that govern digital platforms. He earned a PhD in computer science from the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he was advised by Amy Bruckman and Eric Gilbert, and held positions at the University of Washington and Harvard's Berkman Klein Center. Much of his work studies Reddit, including the effects of Reddit's quarantine intervention on r/The_Donald, the consequences of deplatforming r/The_Donald and r/Incels, transparency in content-removal explanations given to users, and the behaviour of Reddit's AutoModerator tool. His scholarship combines large-scale data analysis, causal inference, surveys, and interviews to evaluate how moderation decisions affect communities and to inform the design of fairer moderation systems, making Reddit a central testbed for his research.
