Biography
Steve Sobel, known online by the handle 'honestbleeps,' is the creator and principal maintainer of Reddit Enhancement Suite (RES), one of the most widely installed browser extensions ever built for Reddit. A Chicago native, Sobel has worked as a full-stack software engineer for roughly two decades and has described RES as a project he built and continued to develop in his spare time out of a personal love for Reddit and for improving its user experience.
RES did not begin as a polished extension. By Sobel's own account on the project's official site, it started as a series of Greasemonkey userscripts that grew out of requests in Reddit communities such as r/somebodymakethis, where users asked for small interface tweaks. Over time Sobel consolidated and expanded these scripts into a single, configurable extension offering features like inline image expansion, comment-thread navigation, account switching, keyboard shortcuts, and night mode. The project was released as open source and is hosted publicly on GitHub under his honestbleeps account, where a community of contributors has helped maintain it across Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, and Safari.
As Reddit's official site redesigns and, later, its mobile apps changed the platform's interface, RES became closely associated with the 'old Reddit' experience that many longtime users preferred. The extension grew to be used by millions of people and is frequently cited in coverage of Reddit power-user culture. Sobel has generally kept a low public profile, communicating mainly through the project's GitHub repository, its official website, and his personal accounts rather than through media appearances.
Unlike many figures in Reddit's history, Sobel is not connected to a moderation scandal, a banned community, or a legal dispute. His notability instead rests on community tooling: he is an example of an independent developer whose volunteer open-source work shaped how a large share of Reddit's audience actually experienced the site for more than a decade. His story is often contrasted with the 2023 third-party app shutdowns, since RES operates as a browser layer over the website rather than as a separate API client, which left it less exposed to the API pricing changes that ended many other Reddit tools.
