William A. Maher
Lead attorney for Reddit in Reddit v. Perplexity / SerpApi
Wollmuth Maher & Deutsch LLP
Biography
William A. Maher is a founding member of the law firm Wollmuth Maher & Deutsch LLP and leads the firm's litigation and dispute-resolution group. He earned his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law and his undergraduate degree from the College of William & Mary, and has practised commercial litigation for more than thirty years. He is the first-named, signing counsel on Reddit's 2025 federal complaint accusing Perplexity AI, Inc. and the data-scraping intermediaries Oxylabs, AWMProxy, and SerpApi of large-scale circumvention of access controls in order to harvest Reddit content, with claims brought under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and state law. His firm's own profile of him confirms that he represents Reddit in the lawsuit against Perplexity AI and the alleged scrapers. The case forms part of Reddit's broader litigation campaign to control how its content is used to build and operate generative-AI systems.
