What changed
On April 18, 2023, Reddit announced new Data API terms and that it would begin charging for API access, ending years of free access. CEO Steve Huffman cited the value of Reddit's data corpus to large companies and AI firms; subsequent pricing of roughly $0.24 per 1,000 calls (effective July 2023) made many third-party apps unviable and triggered a mass moderator blackout.
