Reddit begins replacing private messages with Reddit Chat

In March 2025 Reddit announced it would replace legacy private messages with Reddit Chat. By the company's own H1 2025 transparency report the migration cut PM volume by about 46% (280.5 million PMs sent), while 3.5 billion chat messages were exchanged — moving a decades-old communication channel onto infrastructure with automated moderation (92.9% of removed chat messages were first flagged by Reddit automation).
