Summary
In December 2025 Reddit filed a challenge in the High Court of Australia seeking to have the social-media minimum-age law declared invalid. Reddit argued the ban infringes Australia's implied constitutional freedom of political communication by barring all under-16s from political discourse on age-verified platforms, and that the law is not reasonably appropriate and adapted to its purpose. Reddit also disputes whether it should be classified as an age-restricted social-media platform at all. Despite the challenge, Reddit stated it would comply with the law. A separate constitutional challenge was brought by the Digital Freedom Project on behalf of two 15-year-olds, with an initial High Court hearing expected around February 2026.
