Online Harms Act (Bill C-63)

Bill C-63, the Online Harms Act, was introduced in the House of Commons on February 26, 2024 by the Justice Minister. It would have imposed a duty on regulated social-media services, a category covering platforms like Reddit, to reduce user exposure to seven types of harmful content, overseen by a new Digital Safety Commission, Ombudsman, and Office. The bill stalled at second reading and died on the order paper when Parliament was prorogued on January 6, 2025; it never became law. Successor efforts followed in subsequent sessions.
