Summary
In March 2025 the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens) opened a GDPR investigation into the lawfulness of Reddit licensing users' public content to developers of large language models and other AI systems. The probe examines whether using personal data to train AI complies with the GDPR. Reddit stopped cooperating in October 2025, citing inadequate guarantees over the handling of confidential material, and the authority imposed a penalty payment to compel cooperation. In early March 2026 the District Court of The Hague rejected Reddit's civil claims seeking to shield allegedly privileged documents, ruling it must instead pursue administrative-law remedies. The substantive privacy inquiry remains unresolved.
