Summary
In August 2015, Russia's communications regulator Roskomnadzor placed Reddit on the federal blacklist, effectively threatening to block the entire site, over a roughly two-year-old post describing methods for growing psilocybin mushrooms, acting on a referral from the Federal Drug Control Service. Because Reddit served traffic over HTTPS, many Russian ISPs could only block the whole domain rather than the single page, briefly disrupting access. Reddit complied by restricting domestic access to the offending content, and Roskomnadzor removed Reddit from the blacklist within days. No fine was associated with this 2015 episode; it was a removal demand and temporary block resolved by compliance. It became a well-known early example of Russia's leverage over foreign platforms.
