Summary
During 2016, Reddit complied with all six content-removal/blocking requests it received from the Turkish government, resulting in one post and five subreddits being withheld (HTTP 451) for Turkish IP addresses. Researchers at Turkey Blocks and Freedom House documented that several affected sections were LGBTI-related, indicating that such content was disproportionately targeted under obscenity provisions. The removals were carried out at source by Reddit and disclosed in its 2016 transparency report, published in April 2017, though Reddit did not itself identify the censored content. This represents enforced, geographically scoped content withholding via government orders rather than a site-wide block. It became a frequently cited example of platform compliance with selective censorship.
