Iran's national filtering system blocks Reddit
2014–present
Network-measurement research by the Open Observatory of Network Interference found reddit.com blocked by Iranian ISPs as part of the country's centralized filtering regime, a block that has persisted for years.
What happened
Iran operates one of the most extensive and centralized internet-filtering systems in the world, administered through a state committee that maintains a national blocklist enforced at the ISP level. Among the foreign platforms caught by that system is Reddit. In a multi-year study of Iranian censorship covering measurements gathered between September 2014 and September 2017, the Open Observatory of Network Interference (OONI) documented that reddit.com was among the sites returned as blocked by Iranian networks, alongside a long list of social-media, news, and circumvention services.
Unlike a single dated takedown order, Iran's block on Reddit is a standing condition of the network rather than a one-off event. Users inside the country generally reach the site only through VPNs or other circumvention tools, which the authorities periodically target in their own right. The block sits within a broader pattern in which Tehran restricts platforms it cannot directly monitor or compel, particularly those that host political discussion, organizing, or material the state deems contrary to its values.
Reddit's inclusion is notable precisely because the platform is not primarily a news outlet or a messaging service of the kind Iran most often targets. Its open, pseudonymous, community-driven structure — the same features that make moderation difficult elsewhere — make it the type of venue authoritarian filtering regimes tend to treat as ungovernable and therefore block wholesale rather than negotiate with.
The censorship intensified during periods of unrest. Iran has repeatedly throttled or severed internet access during protests, and platforms already on the national blocklist remained unreachable through those windows. For Iranian users, Reddit's persistent unavailability is one strand of a much larger curtailment of the open internet, documented over successive years by independent measurement projects and digital-rights organizations.
Because the block is implemented at the infrastructure level and is not the subject of a published, Reddit-specific legal order, it is best understood as part of Iran's general filtering policy as applied to Reddit. The strength of the evidence rests on direct network measurement: OONI's probes recorded the block reproducibly across Iranian ISPs, and the finding has been echoed by the Tor Project and in summaries of Iranian internet censorship.
Impact
Reddit is effectively inaccessible to ordinary Iranian users without circumvention tools, cutting an entire population off from one of the larger English-language discussion platforms. The case illustrates how Reddit's open structure makes it a default target for wholesale filtering regimes that block rather than negotiate, and it shows the value of independent network measurement: the block is documented by reproducible OONI probes rather than by any public order from Tehran, which has issued no Reddit-specific statement.
