Biography
Jacob Eisenstein is a computational linguist and research scientist at Google, formerly a faculty member at the Georgia Institute of Technology's School of Interactive Computing. His research centres on natural-language processing and computational sociolinguistics, including how language varies across communities and over time. He is a co-author of 'You Can't Stay Here: The Efficacy of Reddit's 2015 Ban Examined Through Hate Speech,' the 2017 study that measured changes in hate-speech use after Reddit banned several toxic communities, contributing the computational-linguistics methodology used to detect hateful language across more than one hundred million Reddit posts and comments. He is also the author of a widely used textbook on natural-language processing. His scholarship on language in online communities has repeatedly drawn on large-scale social-media data, with the Reddit ban study standing among the most cited applications of those methods to questions of platform governance.
